Theory of Operation

IPMB interface

The SPM communicates with the rest of the system components through an Intelligent Platform

Management Bus (IPMB-0). Pull-up resistors required for this bus are populated on the SPM

and activated by the IPMB controller when required.

Ethernet interfaces

Two 10/100/1000 Ethernet interfaces are brought onto the SPM via the 3x32 shelf connector

to support a shelf manager daughter card.

These signals are routed as differential pairs of 100 ohm impedance to the 2x32 pin shelf

manager connector.

Redundancy

When there are two SPMs in a shelf, one of the Renesas H8S/2168 microcontrollers will

determine that it is ‘active’ on powerup based on the state of the backplane signals.

Software can override the default selection of the active SPM module at any point after power-

up.
